For this episode I interview Jennifer Dorner, Executive Producer of POP Montreal. Jen started her position with this organization in Spring 2020, just as the world was going into pandemic mode. And while starting a new job in arts' event planning, virtually, during a pandemic, isn't necessarily easy, Jen's background as a contemporary visual artist has prepared her with skills to take on this challenge - In contemporary arts you're always having to prepare for the unknown, and when most institutions are used to more systemic ways of doing things, Jen could see solutions in the unusual spaces and creative opportunities .
We discuss what this has meant so far for Pop, what has emerged despite the odds, what has changed, and what are we looking forward to. We discuss how Montreal, Quebec, and Canada have responded to this crisis when it comes to funding and supporting the arts. And we discuss the hurdles presented by not knowing what state of pandemic conditions you'll be presenting in months down the line - there are as Jen describes "Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D....all the way to Plan Z". There have been obvious challenges, but there have definitely been silver linings too. One example is how Remote technologies have allowed for incredible keynote speakers from around the world who they may never have otherwise had access to. In general, it has re-framed the choices we make and Jen observes that with climate change, we really do have to be more economical about when we do get together, and recognize that there are other ways of doing things. So while we all hope for a safe return to gathering and enjoying arts and music experiences together, hopefully we will lean into some of these new possibilities and continue those practices as well.
Pop Montreal celebrated its 20th anniversary this past fall, and you can find more information about attending or applying to perform at popmontreal.com Thank you Jen for connecting and sharing today!
